Although MasterFile's unique "document centric" repository was specifically designed and built for native review, or PDF or image format document review, it was also designed to store not only documents in their native format but also in PDF format as well; that is, MasterFile can store your documents in both native and PDF format simultaneously, as seen in the portion of a document profile below which shows a native format Word document stored with a PDF version of the same document:

This design objective was driven not just by the necessity and value of having both native and PDF versions of documents available for document review and production during litigation, but it was also driven by MasterFile's fundamental purpose to let litigators, researchers, students and investigators set out their case. A key element of this task is being able to cull extracts key of information from the evidence to substantiate argument which prove the facts of each issue, as shown in the diagram.

To ensure extracts could be culled from any type of document simply and consistently, MasterFile standardizes all documents to PDF format. To create these PDFs, the Evidence Cruncher OCRs images of paper documents that have been scanned and generates "image over text" PDFs, while electronic, native format documents such as those created by word processors are converted by the Evidence Cruncher directly to PDF.

The Evidence Cruncher is designed for converting, in bulk or as needed, native format documents created by widely used desktop applications, such as Word, Excel, Outlook e-mail or Lotus Notes e-mail and databases into PDF format. In total over 100 native document formats are supported.

While the Evidence Cruncher is designed for batch conversions of documents, MasterFile provides a free, integrated PDF printer driver to every user for converting newly created documents, web pages, reports from databases or applications not supported by the Evidence Cruncher. The PDF printer driver saves PDF files it creates in the Watch Folder directory from where the Watch Folder Monitor automatically detects and effortlessly loads them into MasterFile for you.

Regardless of how you create and load PDFs into MasterFile -- either by using the Evidence Cruncher to convert native documents or OCR scanned documents, or by using the free PDF print driver, or by using the E-mail loader or by loading existing PDFs directly with Express Load -- the text is extracted and paginated, using sophisticated text extraction technology, that even identifies and normalizes columnar text into a coherent continuous text stream for easy reading as shown below. The extraction serves another specific purpose: it lets you easily cull the critical information in your documents to manage with MasterFile's exclusive Extract Repository,
